Dear person who stole my hammock from me at Electric Forest,
I wanted to write you and share what you really took from me that day. As you know, my crew and I were sitting to the right of the Forest Stage, next to the fence. We were all sitting in hammocks and on a blanket enjoying the day. I decided not to put up my awesome new hammock because I wasn’t going to be there that long. You must have felt pretty proud when you managed to walk off with it, even though it was just behind me as I was sitting there. You must have been really close as this was not an area where people where were walking past.
What you don’t know is how much that hammock really meant to me. You see, I didn’t buy that hammock, (there is no way I could afford a $90 hammock) I actually won it by coming in second place in a competition to be the King of Electric Forest. At the time I was really bummed that I didn’t win. When Electric Forest presented me with an Electric Forest branded Eagles Nest Outfitters hammock and a branded Osprey backpack I couldn’t have been happier. The heartbreak of losing the competition suddenly didn’t matter. It was all worth it.
The truth of the matter is that I really needed a hammock in my life. I go from festival to festival on no budget, as I work to create my dream life of being a festival consultant. This hammock was something I truly needed in my life. Having this custom Electric Forest hammock was going to be something I was going to have with me in all of my future travels, and you took that from me. The thing that hurts worst is the fact that you got to sink back into the crowd and enjoy the rest of the day, excited that you get to enjoy a new hammock, while I spent the rest of my day doing everything I could to try and enjoy the rest of the last day of my favorite festival. It was just hard for me to get over the fact that someone would go that far out of his or her way to take something from a fellow festival goer.
It’s been two days since you stole that hammock, and I’m already getting over it. I believe that everything happens the way it’s supposed to, so I obviously wasn’t meant to own that hammock. This must not be as easy for you though. Every time you see that hammock you need to realize that your decisions to steal from such a loving community are the reasons that your life is never going to work out. People will never trust you, luck will never be on your side, and you will always be the owner of the short end of the stick. This is how the universe works; this is what keeps the good people going while continually punishing people who steal.
Lastly, I want to let you know that I forgive you. You must have had a tough life growing up if you are okay with stealing just to steal. I’m sorry this happened to you. It’s not too late to change your ways, so let me know if I can help.
See you at the next one,
The Festival Guy – Weird Turned Pro
PS: This experience has not changed my view of the festival crowd. Of the 36 festivals I have attended, this is the first experience like this I have ever had.
